How to Use Moustache Wax Step by Step
A clear shape starts with a simple routine.
Your moustache looks decent in the mirror. Then you have a coffee, leave the house, and one side starts doing its own thing.
Learning how to use moustache wax makes styling much easier: start with clean, dry hair, soften a small amount of wax, spread it evenly and shape before it firms up. The amount and preparation matter just as much as the hold you choose.
Here is how to get the basics right.
What you need
Have your moustache wax, a small comb and a mirror ready. If you use Tangaroa 2Go Strong Hold, you will also need a hairdryer to soften the wax before application.
Medium Hold suits flexible everyday styling. Strong Hold gives more support for stubborn hairs and defined shapes. If you are still choosing, read our Medium vs Strong Hold guide.
1 Start with clean dry hair
Remove leftover product and gently dry your moustache. After a shower is a convenient time, but wait until the hairs are dry before reaching for the wax.
If you use beard oil, let it absorb first. Your moustache should not feel slippery or coated. When you are trying to solve a hold problem, test the wax on freshly washed, dry hair without oil underneath. That gives you a clearer starting point.
2 Soften the wax before it touches your moustache
For Tangaroa 2Go Medium Hold, expose only a little of the stick and take a light swipe onto a fingertip. Rub it between your fingertips until it spreads smoothly.
For Strong Hold, gently warm the exposed wax with a hairdryer in short bursts until it becomes pliable. Keep the airflow moving and stop before the wax turns liquid or the container gets hot. Take a small scraping and work it between your fingers. Check that it feels comfortably warm before applying.
If the wax drags or pulls, stop and soften it further. Your moustache should not have to survive a tug-of-war.

Start with a light coating and add more only where needed.
3 Apply a thin even layer
Start with a light coating on your fingertips. There is no universal scoop size: a short moustache needs less than a long, dense one. You can add a little more after the first pass.
Work the wax through the hairs, from near the roots towards the ends. Keep it on the hair rather than your lips. Style each side outwards from the centre and spread the product through the body of the moustache, not just the tips.
If you see thick deposits, you have more product in that spot than you need. Smooth them out before adding anything else.
4 Comb while the wax is workable
Use gentle passes to align the hairs and distribute the wax. A compact Maestrocomb helps with the smaller area above your lip.
Stop if the comb catches. Soften the area with warm fingers instead of forcing the teeth through hardened wax.
Comb gently while the wax is still workable.
5 Shape and let it settle
For a natural finish, guide the hairs to the sides and tidy the outline with your fingertips. For a handlebar, gather each end and gently roll it into your chosen curve. Work with the length you have; wax cannot create the extra hair a bigger curl needs.
Once you like the shape, leave it alone while the wax cools and firms up. Constantly adjusting it at this point can undo your work.

Touch up only where needed
After eating, drinking or wiping your mouth, check the area that has moved. Try reshaping it with warm fingertips first. Add a little wax only if that section needs it.
If the whole moustache feels heavy or uneven, washing it out and starting again can work better than adding another layer. For recurring problems, use our five checks when moustache wax will not hold.
Wash it out gently
Use lukewarm water and a mild beard wash or shampoo suitable for the area. Massage through gently, rinse thoroughly and repeat if residue remains. Avoid scraping hardened wax out or pulling it through with a comb. Follow the product directions and keep cleanser out of your mouth and eyes.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I apply wax straight from the stick?
Medium can be applied directly when it glides easily. Using your fingertips makes the amount easier to control. Always soften Strong before application. - Can I use moustache wax every day?
You can use it as part of your daily styling routine. Remove buildup regularly and stop using a product if it irritates your skin. - Do I need more wax if my moustache will not stay in place?
Not automatically. Check preparation, distribution and hold strength first. More wax can make an uneven application heavier.
